Time: An Open Art Collective Exhibition

I've been really bad at updating this blog lately as I've been ill for a number of weeks. During this time the Open Art Collective group exhibition went really well. Fellow OCA students and Thames Valley group members, Catherine Banks and Dawn Langley organised the hang and logistics of showing at the Lightbox Gallery Woking for the rest of the group. There were eleven of us showing in total. We all organised the framing of our own work and drove down to the gallery on the day of the hang. As part of the gallery costs a gallery assistant was on hand to help Catherine and Dawn realise their layout.

They did a really professional job and everyone was very impressed with the finished installation.

We also had an artist's evening a few days after the opening. This was open to friends and family of the artist's and late night visitors to the gallery and cafe space. This went really well and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It was a really good feeling to be part of the group collective and share the experience.

Here is a short video of the layout of the exhibition:

I think everyone did really well and this was a great learning experience for the participants. Also two of the artist's actually sold work which was amazing! Kate Aston sold both her pieces and I sold three of my five pieces. Amazing to see those little red dots!

'Time' Exhibition - The Open Art Collective

As part of The Open Art Collective, an OCA student group that is partly comprised of members of the Thames Valley Study Group, we have an exhibition of work showing for the next two weeks. The theme is 'Time' and opens today at The Lightbox Gallery, Woking:

I enjoyed putting a project together for this exhibition. The work I submitted is called 'Crustal Deformations 1-5' and uses double exposure digital technology to juxtapose two disparate images together.

Crustal Deformations 1 – 5

Crustal deformation is caused by tectonic activity that compresses, tensions, and shears the earth's crust. Material on the surface deforms, creating new landforms that change positions, shape, and orientation.

In this series I conceptualise the geological process of crustal deformation by creating double exposures that merge cityscapes and the built environment with the natural one. The new landforms and oblique planes in my images remind us that in geological terms, the solid ground that we stand upon is an illusion relative to time.

My partner, Gerry, is a painting and drawing student with the OCA and also a member of the collective. We drove down to Woking for the hang on Monday and met up with the other students. The hang has mainly been organised by Catherine Banks and Dawn Langley and the finished exhibition is looking really good. We will be back on Thursday for the Artist's Evening and I'm looking forward to engaging with visitor's to the exhibition.
